Everybody's doin' it--reducing package size, that is...

"Every single company in the food and beverage industry has been doing things to their packaging since last year because the price of raw materials has risen so much," says a spokesperson from Sun Hung Kai Securities.

While the can-size change for Coke in Hong Kong is not a new trend, it does rile consumers. A lawmaker there, who drinks five cans of Coke Zero every week says, "it's less than honest. . . shouldn't prices be lowered accordingly since the can is smaller now?" In the US, Kellogg has reduced the amount of cereal in boxes of some cereals by 68 grams. A Chinese University of Hong Kong marketing expert says "the size-reduction is the same as a price hike—minus the usual consumer backlash. Many consumers won't detect the difference." If the trend continues, however, more consumers are sure to catch on, as their thirst becomes less satisfied with a can of their favorite beverage.
