Walk through the local supermarket and you’ll see plenty of choices when it comes to pasta sauces. Barilla’s Restaurant Creations pasta sauces stand apart from the rest in that they include one bottle of “base” sauce with a separate bottle of “chef’s recipe” seasonings/sauce stacked on top of the base sauce bottle. Together they form an hourglass shape. A spot of glue is applied to the base jar before the top jar is set onto it. The two glass jars are unitized by a 50-micron PETG full-body shrink-sleeve label from Alcoa Flexible Packaging (www.alcoa.com). The clever combo was given a Silver Award in the DuPont competiton.

The PETG adapts well to a steam-shrink process done on equipment from NAFM (www.nafm.com). The label material is reverse-printed gravure in eight colors. Perforations in the label permit easy removal. The label extends from above the lid of the top jar to the base of the bottom jar to provide tamper evidence.

“Our goal was to develop a pasta sauce that retains the integrity and fresh flavor of each of the ingredients,” said Judy Glass, manager of product development, in a previous article on this package (see packworld.com/go/c167). Based in Parma, Italy, the company’s U.S. operation, Barilla America, Inc., is based in Bannockburn, IL. Barilla recommends opening the two jars and mixing them in the saucepan. The company’s Web site says doing this provides a fresher, smoother, and more subtle than competitive retail sauces that are premixed. Product weight of the two jars is 17 oz. Three varieties are available for $3.99.
