Uniformity bill moves forward

The House Energy and Commerce Committee has voted out the National Uniformity for Food Act (H.R. 4167) that provides uniform, national standards and warning requirements for food labeling, advertising, and other communications by food companies.

The bill, which had bipartisan support, now goes to the House floor for a vote.

Similar legislation is expected to be introduced in the Senate. Some states and consumer groups oppose the measure which, they say, undercuts state and local authority and weakens consumer protections.
