Labels on crab

Some people in Maryland don’t want consumers to think they are eating Maryland crab when they’re not. The Maryland legislature is considering a bill that would require country-of-origin labeling of any container of crab meat packed or processed outside the U.S.

It also would ban the term “Maryland-style” on labels of imported crab meat.

Testifying against the bill before the Maryland Environmental Matters Committee, the American Frozen Food Institute said it would confuse, rather than inform, consumers and would require manufacturers to endure the costs of segregating ingredients and maintaining a variety of label stock.
