Stepper motors bring print-and-apply accuracy

At Pharmintech 2019 in Bologna, Italy, Weber Labeling & Coding Solutions demonstrated a corner wrap print-and-apply labeler suitable for pharmaceutical applications where a parent/child relationship must be established between a corrugated case and the items inside.

Weber has made such a machine available for some time. But what was new at Pharmintech was that the two actuators on the LA 4050 CW print-and-apply labeler responsible for applying the pressure-sensitive label and then wrapping it around the corner of the case are electronically controlled by stepper motors rather than by pneumatics. The accuracy of this electronic approach is considerably greater, says Weber. Plus it’s easier to manage the parameters of the stroke—distance, force, speed—when the actuation is electronic rather than pneumatic.

The machine on display at Pharmintech included a Zebra 2E 500 thermal transfer printer.
