French study shows Europeans don't read food labels carefully...

Researchers have concluded that Europeans aren't reading ingredient lists on food packaging, proving that public opinion and consumer behavior often differ.

Although studies show that 80-90 percent of Europeans don't want genetically modified foods, manufacturers who sell both genetically modified and conventional products note that the two versions sell about the same. In fact, the study, funded by organizations as diverse as Monsanto and Greenpeace, found that consumers didn't notice a food contained genetically modified products even after they were seated and left for three minutes with nothing to do but look at the ingredient label. The study was conducted in Grenoble, France, where views toward genetically modified foods are very similar to those across Europe. Labeling of genetically modified foods is a major issue in Europe, and after the study researchers are calling for large labels on packages indicating the content of genetically modifies ingredients.
