Labeling and obesity

In testimony before the House Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness, September 15, 2004, NFPA said the nutrition information on food packaging can play an important role in addressing obesity.

It described the Nutrition Facts panel as “an excellent weight management tool.”

Meanwhile, the European Commission is funding a project called Porgrow to determine how food labeling and advertising could be used to fight the growing obesity crisis in member countries. Project organizers recognize that one set of policies would not work in all countries. The cross-national comparative study will examine the results of different approaches to determine which mix of policies might be effective in which countries. Participating countries include Great Britain, Finland, France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary, and Cyprus.
