GMA asked House Corporations Committee Chairman Brian Patrick Kennedy to oppose the measure, saying it is unnecessary and provides no direct consumer benefits. The bill also requires milk producers to inform their distributors of the existence of synthetic rBST used to produce the milk and requires distributors to inform retailers of the presence of the hormones in packaged milk. FDA has concluded that rBST is safe for human consumption. In 1996, the U.S. Second Court of Appeals struck down a Vermont rBST labeling law for milk, ice cream, cheese, butter, and yogurt on the grounds that there was no proof that the hormone is harmful to health.
