GMA does endorse a Codex labeling standard for foods that may contain a potential allergen or are materially different in nutrition or composition from conventional crops. GMA warned that if Codex continues to move away from its fundamental mandate of setting international standards that protect consumer health and facilitate fair practices in food trade and gives in to regional pressure, confidence in Codex’s scientific integrity will erode. GMA said it is “inappropriate and ill advised” for the Codex to develop nonscience-based labeling requirements for biotech products or set guidelines that encourage countries to develop such labeling standards. GMA also opposed the proposed definition of biotechnology.
Rules & Regs: GE labeling proposal criticized
Responding to a request from FDA for its views on Codex Alimentariuss proposed draft recommendations for labeling of some genetically modified/genetically engineered foods (GM/GE), Grocery Manufacturers of America said it continues to urge the U.S. government to categorically oppose any Codex draft that is not wholly consistent with FDAs science-based labeling policy.
