The organic labeling regulations will apply to beverage alcohol products, as well as other products, that make organic references. In anticipation of the new organic labeling rules, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms requires that as of May 1, 2000, that beverage alcohol labels containing some reference to organic products be qualified with the statement: "Approved pending USDA final rule establishing a National Organic Program (see 65 Fed. Reg. 13512 March 13, 2000)."

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is in the process of finalizing its labeling regulations for organic food products. It expects to complete the task by the end of 2000, which will be followed by a 12 to 18 month implementation period.
