In a move applauded by food processors and the retail food industry, the agency would establish specific, national procedures for checking compliance with net contents labeling requirements. The move would pre-empt efforts by states to set their own food-weight standard, and bring national uniformity to the issue. FDA wants to allow only the drained weight of a food packed in a liquid or broth to be listed. Labels on foods packed in pressurized containers must accurately reflect the food's weight after the gas is expelled.
