The International Assn. of Consumer Food Organizations (IACFO)--founded by the consumer advocacy groups CSPI, Japan Offspring Fund and the Food Commission UK--is urging that efforts to harmonize national food safety laws on an international basis lead to higher, not lower standards.

Cigar warnings
Prompted by a sharp rise in cigar smoking, the Federal Trade Commission has asked Congress to pass legislation requiring warning labels on all cigar packaging and advertising, but FTC chairman Robert Pitofsky says the commission may go ahead and impose the requirement if Congress fails to act.

Australian biotech labeling
Australia is considering changes to its Food Standards Code on labeling of genetically enhanced ingredients that are equivalent to traditional foods. In comments to Australia's Ministry of Health, GMA said labeling criteria for genetically enhanced foods should be adopted only if the information is essential to health and safety.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) wants FDA to change its nutrition labeling requirements to include a line for "added sugars," charging that consumers should be able to tell when sugars are added in processing as opposed to occurring naturally in the food.
