EU votes mandatory GM labeling

The European Standing Committee on Foodstuffs, by an overwhelming majority, voted to require special labeling of foods in which at least one ingredient contains more than 1% of genetically modified (GM) material.

The European Commission will now move forward to making the decision law. The 1% was permitted because of the possibility that small traces of GM materials could enter the food during processing and manufacturing.
