Label uniformity bill introduced1;again

This year’s version of legislation establishing national uniformity in science-based food labeling standards was introduced in the House by Rep. Richard Burr (R-NC) with 29 bipartisan co-sponsors.

Last year’s bill was supported by more than 160 members of Congress. It is under consideration by the House Energy and Commerce Committee. The uniform labeling laws and warning requirements concerning “the safety of food or any component of package of the food” would preempt state laws, such as California’s Proposition 65. The uniformity law would not affect state laws on freshness dating, open date labeling, grade labeling, state inspection stamps, religious dietary labeling, organic or natural designation, returnable bottle labeling, unit pricing, or statements of geographic origin.
