Packaging an allergen?

When it comes to food allergens, the emphasis is on the food product and its ingredients. But FDA’s Guide to Inspections of Firms Producing Food Products Susceptible to Contamination with Allergenic Ingredients also directs inspectors to check packaging materials for allergens.

It includes, as an example, the possible presence of wheat residue on foil due to the presence of a wheat ingredient in the releasing agent used in the foil production. It does not appear, however, that FDA considers this a serious concern. An accompanying compliance policy guide makes no specific reference to packaging materials. But food processors may err on the side of caution and seek assurances from packaging manufacturers that their products are free from certain allergens.
