'Cordial' robots hit savings sweet spot (sidebar)

Did you know that...?

• The robots do not fill in a preset pattern, they fill the tray’s empty compartments randomly.

• If the product conveyor were to stop, one robot arm would fill the entire tray.

• The red light seen shining on the cordials in images isn’t the vision system’s beam, it only provides a visual confirmation that the system is on. The infrared beam scans up invisibly from beneath the conveyor and is read by a sensor array in a housing directly over the conveyor.

• The robots could pack faster than 90 pieces/min/unit, but the G-forces would tear the product apart.

• The tray flow is opposite the cordial flow, which makes for a faster and more efficient operation (see story for details).
