WD-40 caps convenience

Starting this month, WD-40 Co., San Diego, CA, turns convenience up a notch with a new closure, the NotchCap. It is used on all aerosol cans of WD-40 lubricant, including retail sizes from 2-oz through 11-oz. Additionally, a 14.5-oz version is sold at Costco, while a 16-oz industrial size not for retail sale will also sport the NotchCap.

The 1’’-dia red cap is injection-molded of polyethylene by Berry Plastics (Evansville, IN). It has a channel in the top into which the straw (or tube) snaps when not in use. A 9/16’’-dia pressure-sensitive label is applied over the cap by Berry using automatic equipment. The label flags the cap with the words "NEW! NotchCap straw holder." The straw is affixed to the can side via p-s tape as usual.

"It’s really another step we’ve taken to add value and make our product more convenient to use," says brand manager Tom Barman. "Since we often receive calls asking for replacement straws, we decided to provide users with a way to keep the straws from getting lost in the first place." The products’ suggested retail pricing remains unchanged. This permanent development follows the company’s temporary straw strap promotion (see September ’00, page 2), which addressed the same "lost straw" problem.
