FDA is currently developing guidance by which companies can test potential packaging to confirm its safety as a container for foods being irradiated. Industry is working with FDA to ensure that the guidance is practical. So far, FDA appears to be trying to develop a protocol that will give industry flexibility in designing acceptable testing.
Irradiation packaging
Although irradiation is now being recognized as a potent food safety tool and more and more foods have been approved for irradiation, its increased use may be limited by the small number of packaging materials and additives cleared for use in FDA regulations.
