Unlike polystyrene, the starch-based peanuts dissolve in water and can be composted. Puffed peanuts are either bagged or shipped in bulk, while the pellet version is a pre-finished form of peanut that allows economical shipping internationally. Peanuts are puffed from the pellets using a special extruder that heats the starch mixture and acts like a giant air popper to puff the product into an “I”-shaped interlocking “peanut” for packaging and transport applications. Both product and process are environmentally friendly, with “puffing” process offering no detrimental air emissions.
