Microwave pasteurization hits Japan

Fujicco Co., Ltd., a leading food producer in Japan, has launched a line of refrigerated ready meals with extended shelf life thanks to microwave pasteurization technology.

The Fujicco launch is a result of close cooperation between Sweden’s MicVac, the developer of the microwave pasteurization technology, and DNP, one of Japan’s largest packaging materials suppliers. In their factory outside Tokyo, Fujicco has installed a MicVac line to produce a range of ready meals that are distributed through the Family Mart convenience stores and various supermarkets.

Nutrition, taste, and overall quality are said to be optimal in chilled foods that are microwave pasteurized rather than treated with more conventional thermal processes. For a brief informational video on MicVac technology, go here.
