Brunei eyes global halal market...

The development of halal cosmetics and pharmaceuticals is key if Brunei is to grab a share of the exploding halal market—products approved as religiously proper for Muslims. In the past, the country has focused on halal food production. But this year Brunei became the first country with halal pharmaceutical guidelines—"initiated due to interest from foreign investors on setting up halal pharmaceutical plants in Brunei." And the halal cosmetic industry, said to be to be worth $560 million US globally, is also one Brunei could easily enter. The country's strengths—its size and the nature of manufacturing non-meat products—make it especially suited to produce non-meat halal products. Next month, The International Halal Market Conference 2010, will be held in Berakas, Brunei. The theme: "Halal: The Next Decade."
