Smaller bar code under development

The Uniform Code Council is developing a 14-digit reduced space symbology (RSS) bar code designed for case-ready packages of meat and poultry, according to an announcement made at a UCC conference in Orlando in late May.

The UCC is working with retailers and meat and poultry processors in developing the bar code with the goal of conducting a test of the new RSS bar codes in the first quarter of 2004. UCC is also testing RSS codes on produce at one store in Canada. A deli/baker users group is working on standard product IDs for point of sale, according to UCC.
