Shanghai to track all major food quality by 2010...

A source-tracing system will be in place by 2010 to ensure food quality in the Chinese city of Shanghai.

The system will allow products to be traced back to the producer, and will provide detailed information regarding place and time food is grown, fertilizer--if any—used, and when it is applied, and other pertinent data. Pork is currently sold using a source-tracing system, and a milk source-tracing system is being developed. Currently, 300 machines in supermarkets allow "consumers to check the Quality Standards Certification of products on sale and report unlicensed products."
