Omron Automation and Safety: New GX-Series EtherCAT I/O Blocks Deliver Smart Functionality

Omron introduces a new series of EtherCAT I/O blocks for high-speed EtherCAT systems based on Omron Industrial Automation’s CJ2 programmable logic controller platform. The compact GX-Series includes digital, analog, and pulse I/O modules to support complete machine automation with high-speed input functionality and microsecond ON/OFF times that fully leverage EtherCAT’s fast cycle times. The GX-Series has been fully certified by the EtherCAT Technology Group (ETG) to ensure machine builders and end users the maximum flexibility and reliability for their designs.

The GX-Series provides an extensive array of modules for EtherCAT, including Digital I/O Modules, Relay Output Units, Analog I/O Modules, and Encoder Input Modules. All GX-series slaves support automatic and manual address setting; manual addressing by rotary switches allows easy system expansion or modification without reprogramming the control system.

Specific features include:

Digital I/O Modules
• 16 to 32 I/O points per node
• Input, Output, or mixed In/Out
• NPN (sinking) and PNP (sourcing) models
• Available with three I/O connection methods
• On/Off delays of 200 μs max
• Adjustable input filter to cope with electrical noise or contact chattering
• I/O power supply: 20.4 to 26.4 VDC

Relay Output Unit
• Screw terminal I/O connections
• 16 user-serviceable relays
• Up to 240 VAC, 3 A per output

Analog I/O Modules
• Four analog inputs or two analog outputs
• All points individually configurable for voltage or current signals
• Signal ranges: 0 to 5 V, 0 to 10 V, -10 to +10 V, 4 to 20 mA
• Resolution: 1/8000 of full scale
• Conversion time: 0.5 ms per I/O point

Encoder Input Modules
• Two incremental encoder inputs per module
• 32-bit binary counters
• Open collector input type, up to 500 kHz
• Line driver input type, up to 4 MHz
• Includes two latch inputs plus one reset input
