New U.K. molded fiber company launches

The International Molded Fiber Association (IMFA) has announced the opening of a new molded fiber packing product manufacturing operation in North Lincolnshire, U.K., England’s first manufacturer of industrial pulp packaging.

Moulded Fibre Products Ltd. (MFP), a new addition to the Anglo-Irish Leisuregrow Group, occupies a 60,000-sq-ft facility in Flixborough, England. The facility is strategically positioned near major motorway networks, putting MFP within reach of all the major urban areas of the U.K. and close to the seaports of Hull and Grimsby, connecting them to Northern and Eastern Europe.

MFP’s strategy is to concentrate on building U.K. turnover before looking at manufacturing in other countries. “Initially, the domestic market will be our main focus, and that will be customer-driven, but we expect to export to a number of European countries as we develop our range of products,” explains MFP managing director James Gallacher.

MFP is currently operating a new, state-of-the-art SPM rotary machine along with a Merrill Airdyne dryer, and is set up to install two additional SPM production lines. The operation uses “in-line wet press” technology; future plans call for the installation of an automatic after press. MFP will also distribute specialized after-press machinery used to increase performance qualities of molded fiber products.

MFP possesses an in-house design team and tooling facility, allowing it to produce designs within 24 hours and turn around samples within three days.

Gallacher sees a great deal of potential within the market beyond egg boxes and drink/produce trays. “The electronics packaging market has massive growth potential for us, from smartphones to white goods,” he states. “Industrial packaging products, such as endcaps are an area of interest. MFP also has the flexibility to cater for small-volume requirements, as well as multi-container drop customers, so we can handle orders ranging from 10,000 to 100 million units.”
