Dairy-products firm gains visibility into manufacturing

New Zealand's Canpac International, Ltd., an integrated packaging facility serving multinational dairy companies on a contract basis, brings predictive intelligence to its processing and packaging operations through its implementation of a Pavilion8 software platform from Pavilion Technologies , a Rockwell Automation division.

The solution monitors 32 manufacturing lines in six departments and brings the information from disparate data sources to plant managers and line operators in one easy-to-use, browser-based system that allows for anytime/anywhere secure access. Described as a Production Performance Management (PPM) application, the Pavilion solution automatically and instantaneously provides predictive assessments of a plant's performance. This allows highly informed production and business decisions.

Canpac's need for manufacturing visibility is especially acute due to the nature of its business, which is diverse to say the least. It has the ability to manufacture and print nearly 500 types of cans and 160 types of flexible pouches. Each year the firm, which is a division of New Zealand-based Fonterra, prepares more than 20,000 tons of dry blends of specialty nutraceutical and baby food formulas for the multinationals for whom it performs its contract manufacturing and contract packaging services.

The Pavilion PPM is a manufacturing dashboard that captures data from a variety of sources, automatically validates and qualifies the input data, aggregates, calculates, and contextually stores the resulting information. Canpac personnel, from line operators to managers, can view personalized dashboards and KPIs or initiate on-demand reports.

"In the competitive dairy packing market, high quality and consistency of product is a critical factor for success," says Paul Hogben, maintenance services manager at Canpac. "Pavilion's PPM software gives us an edge by providing complete visibility into all of our manufacturing processes to help eliminate inefficiencies."
