Realism in Chinese drug packaging contributes to rising death toll

In China, not only do the counterfeit pills look real, but also the cardboard boxes, blister packaging and foil backing.

In fact, some realistic ultra-violet sensitive logos are also present. The drugs are being manufactured and packaged on an industrial scale, experts say, and the counterfeiters are selling drugs primarily outside China. The World Health Organization estimates that deaths caused by counterfeit drugs run from tens of thousands to 200,000 or more anually. In a recent sampling, 53% of all antimalarials bought were fake!
