Egg producers change seal

The “Animal Care Certified” seal on egg cartons will be changed to say “United Egg Producers Certified” after animal rights groups complained to the Federal Trade Commission that the original wording mislead consumers into thinking hens received humane care.

The logo change will affect about 80% of egg producers.

Although the FTC did not take a position, it encouraged the United Egg Producers, the egg industry’s trade group, to make the change. A spokesman for United Egg Producers disagreed that the old label was misleading, but said the dispute was hurting business.
