3M launches Integrated Packaging Tool

Approximately three years ago 3M (St. Paul, MN) conducted a study of its own complex packaging processes and determined that it was possible to avoid costs in excess of millions of dollars annually.

The company drew upon its years of packaging experience to develop the 3M Integrated Packaging Tool, a Web-based information system that spearheads the new suite of packaging-related services now available from 3M Global Packaging Services.

In a recent study commissioned by 3M and conducted by an independent research firm, 40% of the companies interviewed stated that they have packaging information management issues and are very interested in a solution; 26% of those interviewed said they face the identified challenges but are unaware of what the solution is; and 34% said they didn’t have challenges and weren’t looking to fix anything in their businesses.

The Integrated Packaging Tool brings all the elements of the package together in a web-based environment, whether structural, graphical, or textual, and enables efficient use of people, materials, and suppliers.

Originally developed to improve 3M’s internal processes, the company also considered the tool’s application outside 3M. As part of this new service now made available to everyone, 3M provides a team of experts to evaluate a company’s packaging processes, then uncover hidden packaging-related costs.
