Value of PackML

A recent chat with Patrick Strauss, R&D mgr. and principal electrical Engineer at Langen Packaging, included a few of his thoughts on PackML:

• At many end user companies there may be a person who knows about PackML, but it’s not always the person who buys and specifies packaging equipment. I’m not sure how much better known it is among OEMs, either.

• What is the value of PackML? When it's embraced and applied by customers, its value is significant. It takes the guesswork out and simplifies the job of commissioning and accepting a machine. Another benefit to us OEMs is that it drives standards in programming. Using Pack Tags in our software, the whole software structure is improved.

• We see the potential for benefits to emerge from PackML, but customers aren't asking for it, so we're kind of doing it in a vacuum. We tell customers about it, but there does seem to be a bit of a learning curve.
