Steel package recycling exceeds EU target

According to data compiled by Apeal, the Assn. of European Producers of Steel for Packaging, countries in the European Union achieved a steel packaging recycling rate of 55% last year.

That total exceeded the target of the EU Directive on Packaging and Packaging Waste.

Within the EU, the percentages ranged from Belgium (88%) to Finland (25%). However, the EU reported a 15% increase in steel packaging recycling, compared to 2000, and a three-fold increase since 1991.

On an international basis, Japan (85%) and South Africa (63.5%) now exceed the rate of steel packaging recycling in the United States (58.5%), estimated for last year. -AO
