Maine zaps ban on irradiation

Maine has decided to join 48 other states in allowing the sale of irradiated foods. Governor Angus King signed a bill repealing the state ban in late June after the measure won approval by a state House-Senate Committee.

The National Food Processors Assn. waged a strong campaign to convince Maine lawmakers that irradiation is a fully-tested and proven technology that will help ensure the safety of the food supply. New York remains the lone holdout in banning irradiated foods, but its law expires on September 1.
