As long as national AND international manufacturers abide by it, a new law on the packaging of health products could help South African consumers by standardizing the way vitamins, nutraceuticals and herbal medicines are packaged. Complete traceability is the big issue. The concern for South African firms is that international suppliers will not adhere to the standards being set forth in the new legislation. The concern for consumers? That the costs involved in meeting these standards will be passed along to them. "If passed, this legislation could dramatically shake up the branded consumer healthcare sector," says one manufacturer.
