As long as national AND international manufacturers abide by it, a new
law on the packaging of health products could help South African
consumers by standardizing the way vitamins, nutraceuticals and herbal
medicines are packaged. Complete traceability is the big issue. The
concern for South African firms is that international suppliers will
not adhere to the standards being set forth in the new legislation. The
concern for consumers? That the costs involved in meeting these
standards will be passed along to them. "If passed, this legislation
could dramatically shake up the branded consumer healthcare sector,"
says one manufacturer.
