As the US population ages, the need for medical devices, supplies and packaging will increase to a value of $6.55 billion by 2012. As a result, the demand for commodity plastics, including resins such as polyethylene, PVC, polystyrene, and polypropylene, will increase 2.6% annually for the next several years. Engineered plastics will be in greatest demand because these higher-performing materials will be needed for surgical instruments, diagnostic testing, drug delivery, geriatric care.
