Mozambique seeks to expand exports to its southern neighbors...

Even the poorest countries look to packaging to help increase the bottom line.

Mozambique, one of Africa's poorest nations, is expecting an eight percent economic growth this year, despite low export of food products into southern Africa. A recently-launched free trade area agreement allows some goods to be sent across borders without incurring duties, says a spokesperson for IPEX—the Institute of Export Promotion. But many in the agricultural market are not aware of these duty breaks, and efforts to inform them must be stepped up, according to the spokesperson. "We have agricultural potential and we have to change the range of products to increase the volume of exports. . . we have to improve packaging, labeling," to increase the country's revenue, he added. Currently Mozambique exports "about $83 million a year, a relatively low figure compared to what the country hoped to achieve."
