Tesco is on the march toward United States...

Tesco, the U.K. supermarket giant, will open 50 fresh&easy Neighborhood Market stores in Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix and Las Vegas by the end of February.

It plans to invest 1.25 billion pounds in this challenge to US retailers such as Safeway and Wal-Mart. Tesco's motto seems to be "Whole Foods quality at Wal-Mart prices," a reference to Whole Foods Market, the leading U.S. organic food retailer. Though not trying to complete directly with "big box retailers" Tesco can exploit their cost-saving tricks including centralized distribution and ready-for-shelf packaging.
