Call for FDA-certified health labeling on food. . .

Nutrition researchers are asking the FDA to regulate the numerous labels that claim health benefits on food packaging.

While some labels are well-intentioned, many labels can mislead consumers, nutritionists say, and can cause health risks for some. The muddle of private icons, graphics and categories should be replaced with a single, FDA-sanctioned certification program. Consumers need an authoritative assessment of food products. A red/yellow/green light icon, similar to one introduced in the United Kingdom, has been suggested as a simple, recognizable standard.
