Four tips to achieving sustainable packaging

This is a sidebar to the feature story "Put TBL at the center of the business agenda", which appears on page 55, in the February 2008 issue of Packaging World Magazine.

1 Learn the sustainable packaging lexicon. With so many new terms coming from a variety of sources, understanding these terms is a critical first step to navigating the sustainable packaging space.

2 Reconsider the package development process. The current packaging process will need to be changed to include an increased focus on end-of-life scenarios for materials and packages.

Examples include:
• Designing For the Environment
• Designing for recovery
• Zero waste

3 Beware of sustainable packaging information overload. To succeed, individuals, functions, and organizations will need to be able to sort through, understand, and assimilate information into knowledge and capability to make a difference in sustainability.

4 Balance SI and SP. No one doubts the importance of Shelf Impact (SI) when 70% of purchases are impulse buys. Yet Sustainable Packaging (SP) requirements often run counter to SI objectives. Find a balance so that SI and SP can come together and provide a stronger overall product/package solution.
