SpoonLidz offers a value-added solution

A ‘sustainable spoon’ is part of the package for yogurt, pudding, chili, and other single-serve cups.

SpoonLidz™ LLC  has launched a sustainable spoon that is included as part of the package for yogurt, pudding, parfaits, cottage cheese, applesauce, baby food, chili, oatmeal, and other single-serve cups.

SpoonLidz is a sustainable, prescored C1S 14-pt SBS overlid that, with one fold, becomes a sanitary and--for kids--fun-to-use spoon. There is potentially little or no cost added for the consumer.

The cost is a fraction of other on-pack spoons, and SpoonLidz has much less impact on the environment because it’s made from a renewable cardstock with a "sustainable moisture-barrier coating." It can be manufactured by local printers to minimize costs. The cardstock accepts high, photo-quality printing.

SpoonLidz allows for the elimination of foil printing and shipping pads, which can offset production costs. In this way, one large yogurt producer actually estimated a cost savings by using SpoonLidz. The application of SpoonLidz over a film- or foil-laminated sealed container on or after the filling line uses available pick-and-place and glue technology.

In a survey, the vast majority of single-serve yogurt buyers indicated they would pay 2 cents per cup more for SpoonLidz, with many willing to pay up 6 cents or more, according to SpoonLidz LLC founder Peggy Cross.

“We've had an incredible response from both consumers and the trade,” says Cross. “Consumers can stop worrying about buying, packing, losing, washing, throwing out, or forgetting to pack spoons for many on-the-go products.” Consumer tests have been conducted at Safeway, Costco, and Trader Joe's, she notes.

Packaging Insights has learned that Cross is working on an agreement with the California prison system where SpoonLidz could be used as a standalone spoon. As she points out, "it can't be turned into a weapon." This was an unexpected, promising avenue, Cross adds.

SpoonLidz is available for licensing in most food categories. It’s available in many sizes and configurations, including multipacks.
