One of the Pyramid awards was won by Destileria Serralles of Ponce, Puerto Rico, for an attractive three-color, hot-foil-stamped label applied to bottles of Don Q Cristal rum. FLEXcon (Spencer, MA) applies a durable heat- and cold-resistant p-s adhesive Mobil Label-Lyte 434 stock, which is then printed on a flat-bed screen press in gold, white and blue inks by Spear (Mason, OH). Spear also adds the five foil-stamped gold coins across the bottom of the label. The distiller switched from a paper label in the first quarter of '95 in part to dress up the package for a planned U.S. expansion. The product is currently distributed mainly in the Caribbean and South America. Other Pyramid winners included Astor Products of Jacksonville, FL, and Sutter Home, St. Helena, CA. Astor won with a promo label of NASCAR driver Mark Martin on 2-lb cans of Astor Coffee. Sutter Home won with its Soleo wine label; a replacement for applied ceramic decoration, it's helped increase sales of Soleo, says Sutter Home. Winners of the Golden Mummy award were Van Den Bergh Foods of Lisle, IL, and Good Humor Breyers of Burlington, Ontario, Canada. Good Humor Breyers won with a monolayer metallized Mobil OPPalyte® wrap that replaced a lamination of polyester and paper. Van Den Bergh won with its lidding material on Country Crock and Promise margarine and spreads. Replacing a paper-based lidding stock, the new structure is a three-layer lamination of reverse-printed polyester, Mobil Bicor® TW-L film and a sealant film. Benefits include improved grease-resistance, better machinability, more scuff-resistance and lighter weight.
