Compostable film for flower bulb pack

A consortium of three Dutch exporters are packaging their range of flower bulbs in a transparent, compostable, cellulose-based material called NatureFlex.

NatureFlex is provided by Innovia Films. In this particular package, developed by Hapece Flexible Packaging, the NatureFlex layer is part of a three-layer lamination where paper and polylactic acid (PLA) are the other two layers. The bulb growers wanted an attractive, quality package that was eco-friendly and innovative and that would ensure the contents were clearly visible. The addition of the NatureFlex layer helps the pack stand upright due to the deadfold properties and stiffness it provides.

The bulb exporters who have joined forces on this effort are Florex, Kapiteyn, and Mantel Holland. They’ve even set up a sub-brand for this range called “We Pack Nature.” The brand’s tag line: “A better environment begins at home.”
