Boxed Ray Charles set recreates nostalgia

You will have Ray Charles on your mind with a new collector’s edition music set titled “Ray Charles Pure Genius” from Rhino Records, Los Angeles, CA.

Pw 10233 Ray Charles R

It hearkens back to an earlier era when 45 rpm records ruled the day.

The boxed set created by Shorewood Packaging simulates an old portable record player case complete with a replica 45 rpm turntable with Charles’ “Mess Around.” The components include:

• A hard case complete with hinges, latch, and injection-molded carrying handle made of faux tortoise shell that mimics Charles’ trademark sunglasses. The case is constructed of rigid chipboard wrapped in FiberMark’s Shadow by Corvon®, a 7-mil latex saturated material that imparts a suede-like texture.

• A turntable made of printed polystyrene, with silhouettes and shadows to give it the look and depth of a real record player. The PS sheet is printed offset in four colors before it is deep-draw thermoformed.

• Seven music CDs and one DVD are each packed in Digipaks, a four-panel offset-printed SBS with injection-molded PS tray that holds the CD.

• An inner PS vacform tray pigmented with an elegant black flock color holds the Digipaks in a waterfall or staggered fashion to better display them.

The set also includes a book on Charles’ career in the 1950s that Shorewood also produced. After a printed SBS informational cover card is placed atop the box, the entire package is shrink-wrapped by Rhino’s fulfilment house.

Shorewood, a business of International Paper’s Consumer Packaging Group, produced 65ꯠ of the sets, which launched in September. It retails for $150 and is available at Amazon.com and elsewhere. —Rick Lingle
