Shaped 'tree' pouch grows sales in Costa Rica (sidebar)

Gold—Printing AchievementStand-up pouch packaging manufactured, laminated, and printed by CLP Industries Ltd. helped international candy company Cafe Britt cultivate increased holiday sales of its line of Chocolate Britt candies in Costa Rica.

The unique scalloped-edge pouches are constructed of a reverse gravure-printed polyethylene outer layer laminated to aluminum foil along with a polyester inner layer. Incorporating precise registration techniques, CLP used spot-varnish technology to add extra luster to the tree ornaments and fruits on the tree graphics.

The shaped pouches were formed on a Totani system and then delivered to Cafe Britt for manual top-loading and heat sealing. A hanging ribbon was applied to each pouch during the sealing process. The top of each pouch was laser-scored for easy opening. Each pouch holds 6 oz of candy.

Monica Carballo,Café Britt Marketing & Development Products Manager for Costa Rica, comments, “The Christmas holidays are a very important selling season for us. We wanted to offer packaging that was completely unique and creative to differentiate our chocolates from their normal pouch presentation. We created a concept that combines the shapes of a Christmas Tree and a Coffee Bush. We have worked with CLP for many years. The packaging supplier brings us the quality and attention to detail we need. The Christmas Tree/Coffee Bush pouch helped us sell significantly more holiday chocolates than usual, and we intend to use the design again next Christmas season.” —Judy Rice
