NFPA asked FDA for a 60-day extension, to September 3, 2004, for the comment period on rule making regarding nutrition content claims in food labeling.

NFPA noted that its petition was partly the basis for the rule making initiated in 1995 whose comments were last considered in 1997.

Although the organization continues to support the fundamental premise of the rule making, it said it needed more time to review the technical elements of the proposed complex rule given all the changes that have occurred in the intervening years. The wheels of government grind slowly.
