Calls for "Alcohol Facts" panel

The Center for Science in the Public Interest and the National Consumers League petitioned the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to require uniform “Alcohol Facts” labels on all alcoholic beverage packages.

The panel would be similar to the Nutrition Facts panel required on food packages. The Alcohol Facts panel would list the alcohol content as a percentage of volume, number of drinks per container, the amount of alcohol and calories in a standard serving, and the ingredients. The label would include the government’s Dietary Guidelines’ definition of moderate drinking as no more than one per day for women or two drinks per day for men.

The petitioners noted that existing labeling rules are inconsistent and confusing. For example, wine and spirits must list alcohol content, but beer does not. CSPI also said there are “jurisdictional gaps” in alcohol beverage labeling between FDA and ATTTB.
