RFID STUDY

More than 1.4 billion RFID tags will be used for packaging by 2008, according to the study Radio Frequency Identification for Packaging: Solutions for the Distribution Chain.

The study projects growth by market between 2002 and 2008, with the HBA market growing from 8.9 million units last year to 599 million units in 2008; beverage from 5.6 to 272 million; pharmaceutical from 4.7 to 150 million; produce from 2.4 to 129 million; and dry goods from 0.6 to 45 million units.

The report was researched, written, and published by BRG Townsend, Inc. and Packaging Strategies. The report says two of the factors driving the use of tags for packaging will be inventory management issues and distribution chain efficiency challenges. The hard-cover report costs $3귔 $4ꯠ for a PDF version, plus shipping and handling charges of $10 in the U.S.; $35 elsewhere.
