COO labeling "down under" also opposed

In comments to the Australia New Zealand Food Authority on its proposal for country-of-origin labeling, the International Council of Grocery Manufacturers Associations, a nongovernmental organization, strongly supported the option in the proposal whereby no specific requirement for a country-of-origin declaration would be included in the new joint Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

ICGMA said expanding the labeling requirements to include the origin of the ingredients of a food product is particularly troublesome because companies often obtain ingredients from different sources in different countries at different times of the year. ICGMA said the cost of label changes alone from any new requirements would be at least $10 million to $100 million for food products sold throughout Australian supermarkets. They would also be confusing to consumers.
