The proposed label reads: “Beef: Made in the USA. This beef is processed from cattle raised and fed for at least 100 days in the United States.” This definition of “made in the USA” was the result of intense yearlong negotiations among segments of the beef industry. The definition runs counter to one contained in the Consumer Right to Know Act of 2001 country-of-origin labeling legislation, which states that beef identified as “made in the USA” must come from animals born, raised, and slaughtered in the United States.

USDA is considering a petition, endorsed by American Farm Bureau, AMI, National Cattlemens Beef Assn., National Meat Assn., and Food Marketing Institute, to create a USA Beef voluntary certification label for industry to use as a marketing tool to increase beef sales.
