In its 2000 agriculture department appropriations bill, Congress directed USDA to develop regulations on defining which cattle and fresh beef products are “Products of the U.S.A.” and to determine appropriate labeling terminology to identify these products. Current regulations allow voluntary labeling of fresh beef products using terms such as “U.S.A. Beef” or “(state) Beef” to signify that the cattle were born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in the United States or in specific geographic locations of the United States.
What's the beef?
The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture is seeking public comment on a proposed rule making regarding the definition and labeling of United States cattle and United States fresh beef products. Comments are also being solicited on whether such beef products should bear labeling claims different from currently permitted claims.
