Meat nutrition labels

Plugging a hole in the government’s mandatory nutrition labeling, the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture announced it would seek such labeling on all fresh meat and poultry.

Details on the meat labels won’t be finalized until late summer, but Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman said they are likely to list fat, cholesterol, saturated fat, and calories in the same format as found on other nutrition labels.

USDA’s announcement came on the heels of the government’s latest dietary guidelines, which urge Americans to eat less saturated fat. Without nutrition labels, consumers have no way to determine the fat content of the meat and poultry they prepare.
